The wine growing area of Rust amounts to 440 ha and is divided into “Rieden” or Cru-vineyards following a hundred of years old Rieden-nomenclature.
This explains the enormous importance of wine growing on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl. All of our vineyards are east-southeast elevation sites facing towards the Neusiedler Lake. The soils vary, even within few rows, and can be differentiated into different types, taking Rust as the centre.
the soils are loamy, cool and dense - ideal for Blaufränkisch and humid-loving white wine varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc. Rieden: Gmärk, Pand-Ertl, Unterer Baumgarten
lime-clay soils have a top-layer of loess, which again is perfect for the native Blaufränkisch. Rieden: Mitterkräftn, Pandkräftn, Oberer Wald
the soils contain increasingly more chalk and are thus optimally suitable for typical Burgundy varieties (e.g. Chardonnay). The soils of the vineyards to the southwest have a high portion of minerals, slate and quartz crystals, thus favouring aromatic varieties such as Syrah/Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot. Rieden: Geier Umriss, Öden, Riegelpand, Kraxner, Plachen, Turner.
is pure schist and the topographically highest vineyard in Rust
with rather sandy soils opens to the south, there the Zweigelt feels at ease.
