Burgenland greets Bordeaux. With Blaufränkisch and the two Cabernets.
Since the nineties it has been a well-known fact throughout Austria that Blaufränkisch and Cabernets “go together well”. Quite naturally, those cuvees come out rather powerful as the grape varieties involved ripen late, have thick skins and are loose-berried.
Just like the Cabernets, Blaufränkisch gains spiciness and aromas with the skilled use of oak barrels. All grape varieties involved show a great ageing potential. For well 20 years the so called Bordeaux varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot) seemed to represent the measure of all things. Great cuvees resulted; wines with a “glory” (at least as far as the prices were concerned).
Every movement bears a counter movement. Which, nowadays, shows off much faster than in former centuries. Out of the blue the “Cabernet-bashing” developed; we witnessed many transformations – from Saul to Paul. The Triebaumer Winery has always been very skeptical towards each kind of extremes. Together with the Barrique-matured wines “Blaufränkisch Reserve” and “Wide World” Günter and Regina Triebaumer have always vinificated a classical type of Blaufränkisch and Cabernet Sauvignon – isn`t that a very nice mixture.
Which, as far as the aggregate state “wine” is concerned, shows off very nicely in form of the powerful and juicy Blaufränkisch/Cabernet Sauvignon. Normally this cuvee is a blend of 40 % Cabernet and 60 % Blaufränkisch. A promising price-performance-series in a higher quality range which was ready for the market in 2002. This year, the 2009 will enter the market. This vintage is characterized by perfectly ripened grape material and promises considerable enjoyment. This athletic cuvee matured in new 300-litre-barrels (predominantly of French oak). For further details please have a look at the respective fact sheet on www.triebaumer.at
Within the entire product range of the winery the Blaufränkisch Cabernet often shows the highest ratio of new wood. In the course of years it has proved that top-quality barrels are able to develop a solid harmony in a wine of a perfect vintage as soon as ten to twelve months of maturation. The “reverse” observation thus means:
“Blaufränkisch Reserve” and “Wide World”, which represent the basic choice for the respective Blaufränkisch Cabernet, mature mostly in barrels which are filled for the second time.
The cellar door price of EUR 11,00 incl. taxes guarantees really “much” wine in the (hopefully large) glass. As Triebaumers thoroughly approve of good food and don`t take things too seriously, the Blaufränkisch Cabernet is internally called “spare-ribs-wine”. The US importer of wines from Günter & Regina Triebaumer commented ironically: “„With the screw cap and a particular amount of Cab in the blend it is even drinkable for Americans.“
