Oh Baby, Baby, It´s A Wide World

What a wide world wine represents … regions, varieties, fashions, terroirs, cuvées … A „never ending story“ – for both, the consumer and the producer. While we still have the old song by (at that time) Cat Stevens in mind (we only slightly altered the hookline text), we think about an up-to-date hit of the Rust based Winery Triebaumer the „WIDE WORLD“.

This cuvée has got the name for two reasons. First, because it includes a „wide“range of varieties, even those which are generally associated with distant winegrowing regions. However, as early as in 1894 and 1895 „prize lists“ of the „Johannes Vineyard“ belonging to the „Royal Free City of Oedenburg“  showed that those varieties which form the basis of the cuvée „Wild World“ have been widely planted in the respective region.  Quite a „wide“world not a „new“one – with a noticeably more than 100 year old tradition. The second reason for this unusual name has to do with the fascination of the vintner couple to travel. You could meet Regina and Günter Triebaumer on all continents of this world, nowadays rather one of them, due to „offspring reasons“.

The cuvée „Wide World“ represents the strongest wine of the winery. Its vintage 2007 contained 14,4 % vol.alc and 32,4 grams sugar-free extract. The grape variety Merlot produces (if crop thinning is carried out properly) a very opulent wine. Furthermore the two Cabernets (due to the loose grape bunches and the thick skin) are prone to mature almost „eternally“. Günter Triebaumer: „At the time we harvest the Cabernets, the Zweigelt is  ready to drink.“

Additionally about ten percent of the must is run off – for reasons of a natural concentration. The vintner couple strongly rejects any type of technical concentration. With the simple explanation: „Because it works this way – and has to!“ Subsequently the wine matures in small barrels (approximately half of the Barrique barrels are new) for about sixteen months and develops to a really powerful wine. An equal hierarchical partner for the Blaufränkisch Reserve within the product range of Günter and Regina Triebaumer. The „Wide World“ proves what the (worldwide considered) moderate climate of Northern Burgenland is able to produce in terms of density and extract  - and that EVERY YEAR – since 1997. A hit! Oh baby, baby – it´s a wide world.

WIDE WORLD – Vintage 2007

Intensive purple, rather opaque, thick tears, very voluminous and characteristic aroma spectrum on the nose. Graphite, a lot of black berries, well dosed noble chocolate. Noble notes of cedar, ivory and roasted macadamia nuts, very opulent and complex appearance. Dry, compact tannin structure, lush berry fruit, due to its intensive aromas nice to chew. Very long. A proof that it works without technical concentration. Very dense with potential. Gains complexity and attraction with every sip. Thank you very much dear thinning and harvesting team – and maturing in premium barrels!
